Should We Invest in a Surgical Mask For Our Upcoming Air Travel?

Posted on Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

As the swine flu hysteria gets stronger, we’re still trying to determine just how this dangerous pandemic will affect our travel plans. A few of the folks here at Jaunted HQ have air travel plans for this weekend. Travel plans for which we did not buy travel insurance and for which we must absolutely go ahead with. Oh yeah and because we really really really want to get away.

But the swine flu has us a little concerned. We’re not flying to Mexico but with reports of people getting swine flu by just talking to folks who have gone to Mexico recently have us perturbed. Can you imagine what will happen if squeezed into a middle seat in coach?

The NY Times’s “Practical Traveler” says airlines are doing their best to keep the cabin air clean. Boeing boasts of their powerful air filtration systems and Us Airways is thoroughly cleaning the cabins on planes coming in from Mexico.

But what about on other airplanes that have never been near Mexico recently? They could still be ferrying passengers that have recently returned from Mexico. Should we buy a surgical mask or a Mini-Air Purifier (cost $129.99) or are we just totally overreacting? Tell us your thoughts on traveling in the time of the Swine Flu here.

Key West: Key West Spring Break Part 1: Taking the Easy Way Out

Posted on Saturday, April 25th, 2009

We just got back from a blissful spring vacation and the old trope is true again: it went by all too quickly. We were in dire need of rest and recreation, so instead of planning an ambitious and brainy trip to Angkor Wat or Ottawa or something, we decided to press the easy button and head to Key West, Florida for four nights. We took the Acela from Penn Station to Washington D.C. (nice train ride, decent microwave cheeseburgers), dropped Zachary off with his grandparents, and then flew unencumbered to Key West via Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport, which is unbelievably huge.

The heat hit us as soon as we stepped on the tarmac of the island’s tiny airport and it felt great. We had left the chill of the north far behind and escaped to the subtropics. Before long we were in a shared taxi van with a gregarious local driver who provided a running commentary on all the sites we were driving past, pointing out the capsized sailboats in the water, unmoored in a recent storm.

Question: I am flying United Airlines from LAX to Honolulu. United is charging me an additional $98 to sit in “economy plus.” So rather than $364 for my flight, with taxes, luggage fees and this “economy plus,” I’m paying $498. Are all airlines squeezing customers like this?
