Posted on Friday, April 30th, 2010
Leonard Lee just couldn’t help himself. He had been watching new airline charges being tacked on for preferred seating and checking luggage, but when American Airlines decided to charge $8 for blankets and pillows, he went a little crazy. OK, a lot crazy.

Typically we like to announce new and cool airline routes on Fridays, but the possible United/Continental merger seems to be the biggest news this week, and plus we’ve got some Bus Travel routes to announce instead!
Get ready to bus it to these newest destinations from budget bus carrier Megabus when they start on Tuesday: Pittsburgh and State College in Pennsylvania from New York and Des Moines and Iowa City in Iowa from Chicago. They’ve just let the word slip on Twitter, and you know what happens when Megabus rolls up in new cities, right? They love to start the prices at $1!
We just checked up on the routes and indeed they are going for $1, but who knows for how long. This is your Friday evening assignment: make a plan to go somewhere new, and soon. A $1 quick trip from Chicago or New York could be just the weekend you need away from home, even if it is to some less exciting town. At least things will be cheaper there.

New U.S. rules on tarmac delays, demystified
Posted on Friday, April 30th, 2010
In 2006, an unusual thunderstorm pattern in Texas, plus the wrath of a California woman trapped for nine hours on a flight diverted to Austin, created a perfect storm for passengers demanding to be let off planes when they’re trapped on the tarmac. After more recent stories of stuck passengers and more pressure from fed-up [...]

Heh. It turns out that sometimes airline industry analysts get things exactly right. When we wrote up rumors of an airline merger between United and US Airways a few weeks ago, we dumped a bunch of articles on you with people insisting that the smarter merger would be between United and Continental. Compared to US Airways, Continental has fewer overlapping hubs with United, better access to South America, and a strong presence in New York—all huge pluses. A United-Continental merger would also give United a a title boost: “world’s single largest airline.”
We commented at the time that the objectively better deal isn’t always the deal that gets struck, but in this case it looks like that’s exactly where we’re heading. Confirming previously reported rumors that United and Continental were looking past US Airways and at each other, the two airlines appear set to confirm a merger as soon as Monday:
Art Alive Blooms in the San Diego Museum of Art

The San Diego Museum of Art lobby
The San Diego Museum of Art smells amazing. That’s because the flower-filled museum is holding its 29th annual Art Alive fund-raiser, where the city’s top florists offer floral interpretations of famous works of art.
It may sound kind of gimmicky, but it’s a way to offer a different spin on the artwork and get people into the museum. And they will come—more than 13,000 people are expected to stop and smell the roses, calla lilies and other blooms at the four-day floral festivities, which end May 2.

Pike Place Market in Seattle is already a must-see foodie and tourist destination, but in a few weeks it’s going to get an upgrade as the Seattle Cheese Festival hits the market on May 15 and 16.
Cheese showcases—can you say free samples—run throughout the festival on both days, but there are much more focused events as well. Fans of pizza will want to take in the mozzarella making demonstration. Here you’ll learn what it takes to craft something way better than the bagged shredded stuff, and they’ll even teach you how to make burratta—it’s fresh mozzarella with cream in the middle. Of course there will be plenty of wine to go with your cheese as well. Hit up the wine and beer garden, and five tasty samples can be yours for just $10. However, you might want to bring your own crackers—just in case.
