Foreign Grocery Friday: Save Your Tastebuds from Spicy with Ayran in Turkey
Posted on Friday, July 30th, 2010
When we travel, one of our favorite things to do is to pop into a local grocery store and check out the food products and candies we’d never find anywhere else. So we’re trying out this new feature, Foreign Grocery Friday, where each week we’ll feature some of our (and your) favorite overseas treats. Got a recommendation? Let us know!
Every culture with spicy foods seems to have that one milky drink that perfectly cools down your mouth. For instance, you order a lassi in India and a horchata in Mexico, and an Ayran in Turkey. It’s a cold, yogurt-based beverage which we’ve found in not only Turkey, but also in the small grocery stores of the Astoria section of Queens, New York and also the Döner Kebap shops around Europe. Berlin especially loves a cold Ayran with their kebap.
The taste: Ayran is a simple drink, so easy to make that you could whip it up no problem at home. The major three ingredients (or only three, if you’re making it plain) are water, yogurt and salt. Thus, it tastes exactly like natural yogurt watered down with salt water. Although this isn’t the most appetizing description, trust that Ayran is quite tasty. The first sip just hits those places on your tongue that need to be caressed during a spicy meal.
Houston: Lady Gaga Dons a Straitjacket for Her Flight into Houston
Posted on Friday, July 30th, 2010
In what’s quickly becoming a weekly edition of “what crazy costume Lady Gaga wore on a plane today,” we report that the infamously fashion-bold singer made her way into Houston International Airport in a straitjacket.
Well, it wasn’t your typical straitjacket, but a custom-made, cowl-neck straitjacket dress designed for Gaga by stylist Asher Levine. The Daily Mail UK reports that yet again, Gaga found it difficult to walk in her high heels as the dressed cinched closely around her knees. And yet it seems like just yesterday that she was having that deep vein thrombosis scare onboard another flight.
North Plains: What the Heck is ‘Elephant Garlic?’ Oregon Knows.
Posted on Friday, July 30th, 2010
According to the folks in North Plains, Oregon, fun stinks. It’s the philosophy behind the town’s signature event, the World’s Largest Elephant Garlic Festival, which will be stinking up the place August 6 and 8.
Elephant garlic is so named because of its size. Its bulbs are as big as softballs, though elephant garlic tastes more like a leek than regular garlic. The tasty food is grown right in North Plains.

Vancouver: Learn to Sail with Charlie St. Cloud in British Columbia
Posted on Friday, July 30th, 2010
Charlie St. Cloud, which opens in theaters today, stars Zac Efron as Charlie, a young man dealing with the fact that his little brother was killed in a car accident while he was driving. Sounds like a downer, right? The good news is that Zac’s character is also an avid sailor, which provides some serious travel inspiration for the rest of us, even if Charlie is a little messed up.
Though the movie was set in Massachusetts, it was filmed in and around Vancouver, meaning Charlie did much of his sailing off of Deep Cove and in Port Renfew. For the sailing novice, there are several outfits in the area that will take you out for a day, or even overnight excursions, so you can learn the basics.
